In 1920 Dr Charles Pincus, the go to Hollywood dentist pioneered a form of aesthetic dentistry we call Veneers. Over time they have become a popular cosmetic and durable option.. A veneer is a thin piece of porcelain bonded to a tooth. Well fitted veneers combined with good oral hygiene can mean they can last upto 10-15years. We will explore how to maintain your veneers to maintain that Hollywood smile.
1) Practise proper Oral hygiene
If you want your veneers to look flawless for many years, the best thing you can do is to practise proper oral hygiene. Although the porcelain on your veneers can not decay, there may be parts of your teeth bonded to the veneers that could be subject to decay. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily will prevent cavities.
2) Avoid chewing on hard objects
Porcelain veneers derive their strength by their bond to the teeth. However, thin porcelain can fracture under excessive pressure. Habits such as nail biting, pencil chewing and ice chewing should be avoided. In reality, they should be avoided regardless of whether you have veneers or not as they can wear down the enamel on your natural teeth as well.
3) Avoid foods that stain your teeth
Porcelain does not have the ability to stain intrisically. Hence, most good quality ceramics can maintain their colour and appearance for a long period of time. However, the adhesive that is used to bond the veneer to your tooth is not stain resistant. Hence, foods that stain your teeth eg coffee, red wine, turmeric can stain the edges of the veneers , resulting in a less than ideal appearance. Drinks such as coffee can be consumed with a straw to avoid direct contact.
4) Avoid clenching and grinding
Clenching and grinding will damage not only your veneers but your natural teeth as well. If you have this habit, speak to your dentist about how to manage it to prevent fracture of your veneers and severe toothwear.
5) Quit smoking
Smoking not only stains your teeth, making them look more yellow, but is a major risk factor for gum disease. You could develop gum recession as a result of smoking that could expose the edges of the veneers and affect the overall apprearance of your front teeth when you smile and talk. With time, the veneered teeth could also become mobile.
If you are thinking to have veneers, speak to your dentist to find out more how to increase their lifetime. There are generally 2 factors that affect their longevity: 1) How they were done 2) How well you look after them. Good teamwork and communication between yourself and your dentist can mean a longstanding aesthetic outcome.
